Lever hoist

A number of different makes are currently available and in addition some manufacturers produce more than one model. The following information, although of a general nature, gives guidance on the main types.

Type Of Chain

Chain lever hoists are designed to employ one of two types of chain, fine tolerance round steel link chain or roller chain. Due to the potential corrosion problems, roller chain is unsuitable for use in the offshore environment.

Brake Mechanism

The hoist should be fitted with an automatic brake capable of arresting and sustaining the load. It should function at all loads down to a minimum of 5% of the safe Working Load.

Chain Retention

The load chain should be fitted with a stop at the free end large enough to prevent it passing over the load wheel or with some other equally effective means of preventing the chain from running out. The stop should be capable of withstanding a load at least equal to 2.5 times the maximum tension in the load chain when the safe working load is being lifted.
